Bergamot Essential Oil Benefits for Hair

A natural hair care big hitter, bergamot essential oil is a great addition to your hair care routine, which can promote hair growth and, unsurprisingly, make your hair smell incredible. However, how you use it makes all the difference, so we’ve created our guide to bergamot essential oil benefits for hair, which includes:

  • What is bergamot oil?
  • Is bergamot essential oil good for hair?
  • Does bergamot oil help hair growth?
  • Is bergamot oil good for hair growth?
  • Is bergamot oil bad for skin?

What is bergamot oil?

Bergamot essential oil is, quite simply, the aromatic oil extracted from the skin of the bergamot fruit, or bergamot orange. The bergamot fruit (Citrus bergamia) is a fragrant but bitter citrus fruit about the size of an orange, with a yellow or green colour similar to a lime, depending on ripeness. It is thought to be a hybrid of the lemon and bitter orange, and originated in South East Asia before spreading to countries such as France and the Ivory Coast in Africa. It is now grown commercially in the province of Calabria, Italy where the majority of the world’s bergamot supply comes from. Extracts from the fruit have been used as an aromatic ingredient in food, tea, perfumes, and cosmetics, and the oil is a long-standing favourite with aromatherapy enthusiasts and, coincidentally, THE POWDER SHAMPOO team.

Is bergamot essential oil good for hair?

Yes, bergamot essential oil has a number of qualities which make it good for the hair. Firstly, it’s an oil, so it can protect the hair shaft from swelling and breakage due to water. The oils and fatty acids the oil contains are also conditioning, fighting frizz and softening the hair cuticle for longer, more luscious locks while improving shine. Bergamot essential oil benefits for the scalp are also impressive - bergamot is antimicrobial, which helps to keep the scalp clean and free of microbes, and it has antioxidant properties, which can reduce free radical damage in the scalp. This free radical damage can contribute to signs of skin and hair aging, hair loss and other skin problems, so using shampoo with bergamot oil will be useful for a number of different reasons.

Invigorating and Stimulating Shampoo for Thinning and Aging Hair

Does bergamot oil help hair growth?

In short, yes. Bergamot has been shown to be beneficial for hair growth, playing an active role in the promotion of that hair growth. Using a bergamot oil shampoo can help to increase your hair growth, and our Invigorating and Stimulating Shampoo would be a great option for anyone looking to boost their hair growth. Bergamot extract has also been shown to be beneficial for a number of other things, such as psoriasis, cardiovascular disease, anxiety, stress, improvement of cognitive function, and improvement of sleep

Is bergamot oil good for hair growth?

Yes, bergamot oil is good for hair growth. The exact mechanism may be unclear, but bergamot improves hair growth and likely increases circulation to the scalp in a similar way to rosemary essential oil for hair growth

Is bergamot oil bad for skin?

While bergamot essential oil can be a great addition to your hair care routine, it can be irritating to those with sensitive skin or those with an essential oil or synthetic fragrance allergy. For these reasons, we formulated our Invigorating and Stimulating Shampoo to include bergamot essential oil as it's a wash-off product - just like typical shampoo- and has a short contact time with skin. This short contact time reduces the risk of any undesired effects of the oil while giving your skin and hair the chance to benefit from the wonderful properties bergamot essential oil has to offer. If you do have a sensitive scalp, we recommend using our Strengthening and Soothing Shampoo - and remember to always do a patch test in an inconspicuous area before trying any new product!

How do I apply bergamot oil to my hair?

By now, you might be asking yourself ‘How do you use bergamot oil for hair growth?’ which is a very valid question. We would avoid adding bergamot essential oil directly to your scalp and hair, which as mentioned above, can cause unwanted irritation. In our opinion, the best way to apply bergamot oil to the hair is in a well-formulated hair care product, such as our Invigorating and Stimulating Shampoo. The encapsulated bergamot essential oil we use in our water-free powder-to-foam- formula will give you all the benefits of bergamot oil and make your hair smell like a citrus dream, without risking the chance of irritation. Our shampoo also contains gentle coconut surfactants, rice protein, and pre + probiotics, which together create a wonderfully scalp soothing and happy hair environment. The added papaya enzyme unclogs pores and reduces sebum on the scalp, so there’s really nothing not to like (..even if we do say so ourselves).
